The Edible Forest on Marguerite Street

L'Assomption
2024

Located in the heart of a residential neighbourhood in L’Assomption, this project transforms a previously underused municipal green space—largely limited to turf—into a community space inspired by the concept of an edible forest. The mandate, led by the City and entrusted to Opaysage, aims to create an educational and welcoming place that supports community gathering as well as interpretive and learning activities.

The design is grounded in an organic, site-responsive approach that builds on existing site conditions. All mature trees were preserved and form the project’s structural framework, complemented by the addition of native and fruit-bearing trees and shrubs. Species such as apple and pear trees, honeyberries, blueberries, strawberries, grapevines, and hops contribute to a diverse and productive landscape that evolves throughout the seasons.

The space is organized into a series of planted islands defined by hemlock fencing, incorporating flowering meadows and edible gardens. Informal paths edged with natural stone guide visitors through the plantings, encouraging exploration and hands-on learning.

A vegetated pergola anchors the centre of the site, serving as a gathering and educational space. An interpretive panel introduces the project and outlines the principles of the edible forest and intended site uses.

Designed to be accessible and inviting, this edible forest park is intended to become a valued community space that supports nature-based learning and enriches everyday neighbourhood life.
